This blog aims to kick-off a new greenhouse gas measurement project that will encourage citizens to collect scientific data directly relevant for climate change. With recent technological advances it is becoming possible to operate ground-based atmospheric gas detectors at manageable costs.

In contrast to about 40.000 weather stations around the world, less than 100 ground based atmospheric greenhouse gas measurement sites are currently in worldwide operation. The transformation to a fossil-free world urgently needs better spatially and temporally resolved maps, in order to monitor and control the sources and sinks of carbon-dioxide, methane and other trace gases.

This data will deepen our understanding of the human footprint in climate change and will help decision makers in politics and industry to take the most effective actions.
